The unexpected downpour of rain on the Lonaak pass in the northern region led to a sudden cloud burst, resulting in the tragic demise of three individuals, including at least 23 army personnel who were caught off guard. Rescue efforts are underway, and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has reviewed the situation.
Due to the release of water from Chungthang Dam, water levels rose abruptly, increasing up to 15-20 feet suddenly. Army vehicles near Singhtham were swept away towards Bardang Park, officials reported.
“Several army establishments in the hilly areas have been affected, and efforts are underway to assess the situation and make decisions based on the available information. At least 23 personnel have been reported missing, and some vehicles have been washed away in the floods. Research operations are ongoing,” reads a statement from Defense PRO, released from Guwahati. An unexpected warning was issued on Wednesday, starting at 1:30 PM, as informed by officials to the news agency PTI.
