Bharat Ratna to ex-Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur

After the demise of Karpoori Thakur, who dedicated his efforts for the upliftment of backward castes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed joy on conferring the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, posthumously. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness on the decision of the Indian government to confer Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur. In a post on the social media platform Twitter, Prime Minister Modi said, “The recognition for his tireless efforts towards social justice, great leader Karpoori Thakur Ji, and that too after 35 years of his demise, is commendable. The consistent dedication to upliftment, equality, and empowerment of backward classes is an inspiration.”

Karpoori Thakur, born in the Nai community in Bihar, served as the Chief Minister of Bihar twice from December 1970 to June 1971 and from December 1977 to April 1979. In his two terms, Thakur significantly contributed to making the path of reservation for backward classes smoother in Bihar government services
