According to the minutes of a meeting posted on the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) social media handles on campus, disciplinary action has been taken against students expressing dissent. In the hostel council of Hostels 12 and 13 at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay(IIT-Bombay), a fine of INR 10,000 has been imposed on students who voiced their disagreement with the segregated ‘veg-only’ space directed by the Mess Council.
The minutes state, “While appreciating the suggestions made by Associate Dean SA (Student Affairs) for maintaining peace and harmony amidst chaos, efforts should be made to maintain peace and harmony…” The meeting, held online on October 1st, resulted in the decision to impose fines on students found guilty of misconduct, including those who protested against the hostel mess regulations. Several students who allegedly misbehaved during dinner on September 28th, violating the mess regulations, faced complaints, leading to discussions involving hostel wardens and associate wardens at the Mess Council meeting. The hostel wardens from these three hostels, through the Mess Council, have penalized the respective hostels’ messes.
